How it works
- Share the long chat and paste its link above.
- Click Download Markdown, or Copy Markdown.
- In a new chat, upload the file or paste the key parts, and ask ChatGPT to continue from there.
Give the new chat a summary, not everything
Uploading the whole transcript works, but a summary usually works better. Ask the new chat: "Here's our previous conversation. Summarise the decisions, open questions and current draft, then continue from there." Keep the full Markdown file as your record.
Use a Project next time
If a topic keeps outgrowing chats, put it in a ChatGPT or Claude Project and save key outputs as Project files. Each new chat then starts with that context.
Questions
Can I still read the old chat?
Yes. The chat isn't deleted, you just can't add to it. Exporting it keeps a copy outside ChatGPT as well.
