Export a ChatGPT Chat to Markdown on Android

How it works

  1. Open the chat in the ChatGPT app, tap the share icon at the top, and choose Copy link.
  2. Open Chrome, come to this page and long-press the box above to paste.
  3. Tap Download Markdown. Chrome downloads the file straight away and shows it at the bottom of the screen. It's in the Downloads folder.

Where to find it on Android

Your Markdown file is saved to Downloads (also in Chrome's Downloads list). Open it in Obsidian or Markor. Markor and Obsidian for Android both open .md files from Downloads.

What's in the Markdown file

Each turn is a ## heading, ChatGPT's code fences keep their language tag, and ?utm_source tracking is stripped from links. Untick Include my messages to keep only the answers, or tick Timestamps to record when each message was sent.

If something goes wrong on Android

  • Only your real printer is listed. Tap the printer name at the top of the print screen and choose Save as PDF from the list.
  • The print window doesn't open. Some browsers, including a few manufacturer browsers, ignore print requests. Open this page in Chrome.
  • A .docx opens as unreadable text. Your phone has no Word app set up. Install Google Docs or Microsoft Word, then tap the file again.

Good to know on Android

Chrome on Android doesn't support extensions, so PDF extensions for ChatGPT won't help on your phone. This page works in any Android browser.

Do I need to install anything on Android?

No. Everything happens in Chrome. There's no app or extension to install.

Does it work for long chats?

Yes. The whole conversation is loaded before saving, so long chats come out complete.
