Using the official export
In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. OpenAI emails a download link, which expires after a day or so. The ZIP holds conversations.json, newer exports split it into conversations-000.json, conversations-001.json and so on, plus a chat.html that tries to show everything on one page and often freezes on big accounts.
Drop that ZIP onto the box above. Carryover reads it on your device, lists every chat with search, and exports them as Markdown, Word or a Claude pack. If the email never arrives, see ChatGPT export not working.
Questions
Can I export without a share link?
Yes, through the official data export above. It takes longer but covers every chat, including ones you never shared.
Does sharing a chat make it public?
Anyone with the link can view it. It isn't listed anywhere unless you post the link. You can delete shared links in Settings, Data controls, Shared links.
