How it works
- Request your export in ChatGPT: Settings, Data controls, Export data.
- Download the ZIP from the email.
- Click open your export ZIP above, or drag the file onto the box.
What it does
- Reads the ZIP or loose
conversations.jsonfiles in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and it works offline once the page has loaded. - Handles the newer split exports,
conversations-000.jsonand up. - Lists every chat newest first with title, date and message count, and searches inside messages, not just titles.
- Shows only the branch you saw. Edited prompts, hidden system messages and tool calls are left out.
- Also opens Claude exports.
Why not chat.html?
The export includes chat.html, which loads every conversation into one page. On a big account it's tens of megabytes and freezes the browser, with no search. Carryover reads the JSON instead and only renders the chat you open.
Questions
How big an export can it open?
Exports of several hundred megabytes work on a desktop browser. On a phone, very large exports may run out of memory.
Is my data private?
Yes. The file is read by JavaScript in this tab. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
