Why keep a file
A share link is a pointer, not a copy. If its owner deletes the link or the chat, it stops working, and you lose the conversation. A PDF or Markdown file keeps it for good. It's also easier to annotate, print, cite and search.
Links that won't work
Links to a single message (chatgpt.com/s/…), links to private chats (chatgpt.com/c/…) and links from workspaces that block public sharing can't be read. For private chats, create a share link first, or use your data export. More in shared link not working.

Is a /c/ link the same as a share link?
No. chatgpt.com/c/… is your private chat and only opens when you're signed in. Tap Share in that chat to get a /share/ link.
