Export a ChatGPT Chat to Markdown on iPhone

iPhone steps, from the ChatGPT app to a Markdown file in Files. Takes about thirty seconds.

Paste a ChatGPT share link. Have your full export? to search and export many chats.

How it works

  1. Open the chat in the ChatGPT app. Tap the share icon at the top of the chat (on some versions it's under the ⋯ menu), then Copy link.
  2. Open Safari, come to this page, tap the box above and paste.
  3. Tap Download Markdown. Safari asks whether to download the file. Tap Download. It lands in the Files app under Downloads.

Where to find it on iPhone

Your Markdown file is saved to Files › Downloads (or the folder you chose). Open it in Obsidian, iA Writer, or Files' quick look. In Obsidian for iPhone, save the .md into the Obsidian folder in Files so it appears in your vault.

What's in the Markdown file

Each turn is a ## heading, ChatGPT's code fences keep their language tag, and ?utm_source tracking is stripped from links. Untick Include my messages to keep only the answers, or tick Timestamps to record when each message was sent.

If something goes wrong on iPhone

  • No download prompt appears. Check where Safari saves files: Settings › Safari › Downloads (Settings › Apps › Safari on newer iOS). If it points to iCloud Drive and iCloud is full, pick On My iPhone instead.
  • The print screen has no Share icon. On older iOS versions, pinch outward on the page preview. It opens as a full-screen PDF with a Share button.
  • Tapping the copied link opens ChatGPT. That's iOS handing the link to the app. Paste it into the box on this page instead of opening it.

Good to know on iPhone

Extensions don't run in Safari or Chrome on iPhone, which is why a link-based tool is the only way to get a clean file out of the ChatGPT app. Long chats are fine: the whole conversation is laid out before saving, so nothing gets cut.

Other formats

The same link also gives you PDF and Word on iPhone, plus plain text and HTML under More.

Questions

Do I need to install anything on iPhone?

No. Everything happens in Safari. There's no app or extension to install.

Does it work for long chats?

Yes. The whole conversation is loaded before saving, so long chats come out complete.
