How it works
- Open the chat, click Share at the top right, then Copy link.
- Paste the link into the box above with Ctrl+V.
- Click Download PDF. In the print window, set the printer to Save as PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF) and click Save.
Where to find it on Windows
Your PDF is saved to This PC › Downloads. Open it in Edge, which opens PDFs and lets you highlight them. Edge opens the PDF and lets you highlight passages and add notes.
What's in the PDF
Your messages are tinted, ChatGPT's replies run full width, code blocks wrap instead of being cut off, and links print with their address. Untick Include my messages to keep only the answers, or tick Timestamps to record when each message was sent.
If something goes wrong on Windows
- Word opens the file in Protected View. Word does that for every downloaded file. Click Enable Editing at the top.
- The PDF has the page address and date in the margins. In the print window, open More settings and untick Headers and footers.
- The browser shows a download warning. Choose Keep. The file was generated on your own computer from the chat text.
Good to know on Windows
Choose Save as PDF rather than Microsoft Print to PDF if you want the links in the chat to stay clickable.
Other formats
The same link also gives you Word and Markdown on Windows, plus plain text and HTML under More.
Questions
Do I need to install anything on Windows?
No. Everything happens in Edge or Chrome. There's no app or extension to install.
Does it work for long chats?
Yes. The whole conversation is loaded before saving, so long chats come out complete.
