Using the text with other tools
Plain text is easy to search with command-line tools, to paste into another AI model as context, or to keep in a notes system that doesn't support formatting. For many chats at once, open your export ZIP and export Markdown, which is also plain text.
When plain text is the right choice
Plain text is the most durable format there is. It opens in Notepad, TextEdit, any phone and any program written in the next fifty years. It's also the best input for scripts, search tools and other AI models, because there's no formatting to strip. Each message starts with You: or ChatGPT: so the file reads as a transcript.
If you want formatting to survive, choose Markdown instead. It's still plain text, with headings and lists marked up.
