Import ChatGPT chat history into Claude
There's no direct import for chats. Convert the ones you need into Project knowledge instead. It's better anyway.
Or drag your ChatGPT or Claude export ZIP here. It's read on this device, nothing is uploaded.

How it works
- In ChatGPT, open Settings › Data controls › Export data and confirm. Download the ZIP from the email.
- Open the ZIP above and select the chats to bring.
- Export as Markdown (free up to 10) or the Claude pack, then add the files to a Claude Project.
Why a Project works better than an import
Even if you could import every chat, Claude would treat them as separate past conversations. Putting the important ones into a Project's knowledge makes them context for every chat inside that Project. Claude can quote your old decisions, follow conventions you set months ago, and pick up a draft where you left off.
Size
Project knowledge has a capacity limit. The Claude pack merges your chats into files of about 400 KB each, drops hidden system messages and tool output, and keeps only the branch you saw. That's usually a fraction of the raw export.
Questions
Can I do the same for Gemini?
Gemini can import a ChatGPT export ZIP directly in many regions. Where it can't, the Markdown files from Carryover work as uploads too.
