How to open conversations.json
It's every chat you've had, stored as a tree. Drop it here to read it like a normal chat list.
Or drag your ChatGPT or Claude export ZIP here. It's read on this device, nothing is uploaded.

How it works
- Unzip your ChatGPT export, or keep it zipped.
- Click open your export ZIP above and choose the ZIP or the JSON files.
- Search, open and export any chat.
Why it looks unreadable
conversations.json is one long array. Each chat has a mapping of message nodes linked by parent and children IDs, because every time you edit a prompt or regenerate an answer ChatGPT starts a new branch. Reading the file top to bottom gives you messages out of order, mixed with system prompts and tool calls. To read a chat properly you have to walk from current_node back up to the root, which is what Carryover does.
Opening it in other tools
A text editor will show the raw JSON but struggles with big files. Python's json module can load it, then you'd walk the tree yourself. Excel and Google Sheets can't open it usefully. The viewer above is the quickest path to readable chats.
Questions
There are several conversations files in my ZIP. Is that normal?
Yes. Newer exports split the history into conversations-000.json, conversations-001.json and so on. Select them all, or just open the ZIP.
